Marine Corps Base Hawaii
Honolulu, HW

At Marine Corps Base Hawaii, hangers 101 and 105 were each originally outfitted with 72 1000-watt probe-start metal halide fixtures. They were prone to overheating and the maintenance crew complained that they were experiencing an uncharacteristically high frequency of arc tube ruptures. Each hanger was retrofitted with 400-watt Stingray SFM open-rated pulse-start luminaires incorporating both daylighting and timer controls.

The retrofit resulted in a peak load reduction of 104kW and an annual energy savings of 1,286,000Kwh (50% reduction). The total annual cost savings was $134,000 which prompted a rebate of $41,475 from HECO, the local utility. The project received numerous awards as follows:

  • Commander in Chief’s Special Recognition Award for Installation Excellence (2003)
  • IESNA Award of Merit
  • International Illumination Design Award for Energy Efficiency and Environmental Design
  • Nominated for HECO 2004 Energy Efficiency Award
