Retail Lighting
The value of quality lighting in the retail environment has long been appreciated. People are naturally affected by light and a variety of lighting techniques are used to attract attention, manage traffic flow, orient, communicate, and highlight feature spaces and displays. In addition to attracting and guiding the customer, effective retail lighting must also facilitate detailed evaluation of products and completion of the sale.
Shopping is a highly visual activity and effective merchandizing considers lighting-controlled visual elements such as glare and sparkle, color rendition, color temperature, modeling, shadows, and veiling reflections. In addition, lighting effect (and to a large extent, even the appearance of the lighting equipment itself) can convey a subconscious but pervasive message to the potential customer about the nature of a retail business and its merchandise.
Ideally, all of these goals and functions would be accomplished with a lighting system that is also energy efficient and versatile; efficiency for the obvious ramifications to operating costs and environmental impact, and versatility to enable differentiation and customization through lighting effect to support the ever-present need for evolution and reinvention in the competitive arena of retail sales.
